Ripping out the Knits
Published by Elana June 30th, 2006 in Knitting. My sewing machine should arrive today and I’ll very likely miss the UPS guy, unless he shows up just as I’m coming home again. Then I’ll miss Monday because I’ll be camping and it’s a 6 hour drive home from Acadia. No delivery the 4th when I’ll be home, so if he doesn’t leave it for me on Monday, I’ll redirect it to work and lug it home on Wednesday. I expect to be done with the pillow this weekend. The back is 97 rows of stockinette stitch (knit one row, purl one row, repeat and repeat and repeat), but should be good car work. I need to get to Joann’s Fabrics to get some lining and a pillow form (14″). I might pick up more than one or depending on how pillow form is, I might just stuff the lining with polyfill which I have a ton of lying around. I also need to pick up thread for the machine. It’ll be nice to be able to hem my own pants, at least.
I also hope to cast on the afghan and knit the first few rows or so. The pattern looks to be a standard repeat so I’ll just cast on enough to do an addition repeat since I’m using size 15 needles instead of the called for size 17. I could only find rubber needles in size 17. Blech. I might do two additional repeats depending on how big the cast on looks compared to how large the blanket is supposed to be or perhaps to keep an even pattern repetition, if I think it’ll make it look better. Nice thing about an afghan is it’s flexible.
I’ve pulled out the poncho.
1. It was too small.
2. I didn’t like it as a scarf.
3. I didn’t feel like fixing the dropped stitch (it was fixable, I just was fed up with the project)
4. It was boring as hell to knit.
I’m thinking of still using the yarn as a scarf, but instead, I’ll do a reverse stockinette (all purl on the front) for about 4 rows, top and bottom, and about purls along each edge. In the center, I’ll put the beige as a stripe and I’m thinking of cabling the stripe. I’m still deciding on that. I was thinking a wider, decorative cable might be fun to try. I figure size 11 needles will make it a nice tighter weave than the size 15s I was using, but if I don’t like that, I’ll go down to size 8. I have to work out the math on it, but it’ll be a very soft scarf and rather giftable. It’d also be my first pattern which I’ll make myself. Once I develop the pattern, I’ll post it if I like it :).
