Motorcycles and Flip-Flops
Published by Elana October 1st, 2004 in Random Ramblings.Carl managed to snag free passes to The Motorcycle Diaries for last night so we went with K and Bob. I have to recommend this moving to everyone. Even if you’re not aware of who Che Geuvera is, the story the movie depicts is telling and beautiful. This movie doesn’t actually follow Che Geuvera as such, instead, it shows a trip Ernesto ‘Che’ Guevara de la Serna and his friend Alberto Granado as they traveled from Buenos Aires, Argentina, through Chile, Peru, and Columbia on a beat up motorcycle (and on their own two feet). You meet the people they meet and see the indigenous South American people as they do. You begin to see how Guevara became the revolutionary the CIA had assassinated in 1967 and why the people loved him so much. They journey Guevara makes is not just a physical trip, but an emotional one. You see how he grows.
The one thing I like best about this movie is how, unlike Huckleberry Finn, another book depicting a journey through life, Guevara grows and does not end up back at the beginning where he was. This was the most frustrating aspect of Huck Finn for me and for any story to be successful, in my mind, growth needs to occur within the characters. The Motorcycle Diaries is a great story, and well told.
After we got home from the movie, we caught up on the Presidential Debates, which were in progress but recorded by Tivo for us. Kerry kicked his ass and Bush seemed overly concerned about the status of Poland as one of our allies. Riiiight.
We watched the Daily Show commentary as well. Stewart is always good about picking up on the wool the Republicans would like to pull over our eyes. When he interviewed Rudy Guliani, Guliani insisted Kerry was unclear on his position on the Iraqi War, saying Kerry said he was against the war but at the end saying he supported. Stewart vehmently disagreed (and rightfully so), pointing out Kerry was clear throughout of his support of the need for change in Iraq, but his disagreement with how the President went about achieving the goal. Guliani was not thrilled to be called on his bluff. Republican spin doctors were at work attempting to make sure Bush didn’t seem like he lost this debate. Unfortunately, the media is declaring this debate a tie. Not true. Kerry whipped his Texan ass across Florida.
